When we hear the word “prosperity,” many of us automatically think about money. While it is true that money is one aspect of prosperity and money has its uses, the old cliché that money can’t buy happiness is true.
Money can give you more choices and opportunities in life. It allows you to buy more material things, such as a car, a house, and so on. Having money will let you take nice vacations, send your children to college, and more.
While this might sound wonderful, prosperity is not all about money. There are plenty of miserable millionaires. There are also people who have a very modest standard of living who feel they are very well off in life even though they have virtually no material possessions. It’s all a question of perspective.
Prosperity Is in the Mind
In the West, we tend to be a great deal more prosperous than those in Africa or Asia in terms of earnings and standard of living, but does that mean we are happy? And do we even see how prosperous we are?
The opposite tendency is actually the case. We commonly refer to it as keeping up with the Joneses, defining prosperity as having the same things as neighbors, friends and family. It can mean constant envy of others, making you feel less prosperous than you actually are. It can also mean spending on items you really can’t afford and getting you into debt, which is extremely damaging to any chance you have of being truly prosperous.
Being in debt and financial worries in general eat away at your peace of mind. And there’s no point in having a house full of things if you can’t afford to pay your mortgage.
Prosperity Starts with You
Prosperity is about a lot more than money and the things it can buy. It’s possible to live a prosperous and abundant life even when you are earning a modest income. It’s all a question of attitude, and having a prosperous mindset.
A prosperous outlook on life is the opposite of a scarcity mindset, feeling like there’s never enough to go around. A prosperous mindset allows you to live better than ever before even if you never win the lottery or get a raise at work. You will make smarter choices not just about your money, but also about your goals and priorities. You can determine what is enough money for you and your family, and live well with it.
Money doesn’t buy happiness. A wealthy person can feel poor, while a poor person can feel rich. It all depends on their perspective, based on what they value most. Values differ for everyone, but most people would say they value their family.
However, if you are working 18-hour days and never attend any of your child’s concerts, sports days and so on, do you really value family? You might say that you do because you are working so hard to help your family get ahead financially. But kids actually have very simple tastes. They would rather spend time with you than have a room full of toys and no one to play with.
Many people focus attention on the presents at Christmas, but few of us remember the gifts we got. We do remember the fun we had with each other around the table at holiday meals, decorating, and so on, even if these were simple.
Prosperity is not just about money, but about enjoying the best things in life: love, laughter, friends, and family. Prosperity is joy, wisdom, and inner peace, which you can never put a price on.
