As we grow and move through life’s chapters, change, whether big or small, is challenging to face. From making a big move to divorce to the loss of a loved one, whatever it may be, resiliency is the key to coping with change. In order to be prepared to face what life throws at you, it is important to have the right mindset in order to move forward and navigate the ebbs and flows.

Strategies for Coping With Change

Get Into Gratitude

Practicing gratitude is a powerful way to cope with change. It can be difficult to not be hyper-focused on what is bothering you. A great way to break free from the grip of fear when faced with change is to get lost in and distract yourself with gratitude. Consider the little things there are to be grateful for and that are worth celebrating. There are several ways to get into gratitude.

  • Journaling with gratitude prompts
  • Try a personal gratitude session
  • Make gratitude a part of your self-care routine
  • Demonstrate gratitude to friends and family

Work On Your Mindset

When faced with change it may cause you to feel unhappy and unsatisfied with your position in life. It can cause you to look at the world through a gloomy lens, and leave you stuck thinking negatively about things. Slow down and think about your mindset. Although difficult, try to shift your thoughts in a positive way. Whenever you find yourself thinking negatively or stressing over the change you are facing, think about something that makes you smile, and what can go right, and use affirmations to dissolve your fears. Reaching out to and working with a mindset coach can help you to discover ways to work on your mindset. Strive to be opportunistic throughout your day. Find what you may have right in front of you that you can work towards and strive for. Change always presents opportunities.

Share With Others

If you are finding the change you are facing is robbing you of your happiness and motivation, it’s time to talk about it. It is important to stay on top of your mental health, especially if you are experiencing depression. Sharing with a friend or family member can help to provide some relief. Also, don’t be afraid to open up and connect with a mental health specialist who can help consult you on caring for your mental wellness and coping with change, whether it be finding treatment options for depression, or trying therapy. These strategies can help you give you the extra support to help cope with change.

Join a Support Group

Many people will be facing the same changes as you. There are support groups out there on almost anything you can think of just waiting for you to join. Connecting with a support group can help you to work through difficult times with mutual understanding. You can help each other come up with strategies and be there for each other to lean on during rough patches.

Although change is hard, try not to fear it. With the right strategies and with each challenge you will become more resilient. When faced with change, remind yourself you are strong and capable of overcoming struggles, and moving forward will become easier every day.
